“Why Am I So Stubborn”: Will Smith’s Relationship With His Son Gave Jackie Chan A Harsh Reality Check On His Parenting Style in 2015

Legendary actor Jackie Chan shared a complicated bond with his son, Jaycee Chan. The 68-year-old actor, who appears as a very happy-go-lucky person to the world, was inherently not open to his 40–year-old son. According to Chan, he was not very helpful or supportive towards his child. However, things changed when he worked on the famous film ‘The Karate Kid’ with Will Smith’s son Jaden Smith.

Hong-Kong based actor Jackie Chan is one of the most loved personalities globally. He is highly influential in the eastern and western parts of the world. Chan became supremely famous with his martial arts-oriented movies that also had a pinch of comedy.

Jackie Chan’s relationship with Jaycee eased after The Karate Kid

Jackie Chan has worked in several Hong-Kong based films. Later, he expanded his reach in Hollywood once his stardom kicked off. In 2010, Jackie’s one of his most successful movies, The Karate Kid released. It starred the ‘Men in Black’ actor Will Smith’s son Jaden Smith.

During the filming stage of The Karate Kid, Jaden was 11 years old. Chan was surprised to see Will’s supportive and helpful nature towards his son. The extremely caring relationship between Will and Jaden was an unseen affair for Jackie Chan. He could not believe such a version of a father-son relationship. It eventually made him question his own parenting toward his son Jaycee.

In an interview with Associated Press in Beijing, Chan revealed, “Before ‘I was too Chinese, traditional — you, son, go away, I don’t want to help you, you have to help yourself.”

However, after seeing Will’s unconditional support for his son, he questioned himself, “I say why am I so stubborn? I have to help my son,”

The experience completely changed Jackie Chan’s attitude toward his son. He expressed his desire to work with him in films and also in Jaycee’s music albums. Jackie wanted to compose a song with Jaycee where he would apologize to him for his strict behavior with him.

Chan might have become a lot more caring towards his son, but he knows the difference between right and wrong. In 2014, when Chan was an anti-drug ambassador in China, Jaycee was arrested and jailed for marijuana possession.

Despite being ashamed of the incident, Chan wrote a message on the website expressing his disappointment. He took the blame on himself, stating that he did not teach his son well. He wrote for his son, “I’m your dad and I’ll always be with you. We will face the road ahead of us together.”

Jaycee was released from jail after six months in 2015. Chan expressed his happiness on the return of his son and believed that the jail helped his son mature enough. After that, their relationship changed for the better.
