“Love Being a Black Queen”: As Angel Reese Fights Criticism, Simone Biles Subtly Extends Her Support

Angel Reese not only led the LSU Tigers to victory through her performance but also dragged herself into controversy by mimicking John Cena’s “You Can’t See Me Gesture”  towards Iowa Hawkeyes’ Caitlin Clark. Pointing her ring finger at Clark, Reese waved her hand near her face towards the game’s end.  Facing a backlash for her gesture, Angel Reese posted an unapologetic tweet on her Twitter account. Her tweet was supported by Simone Biles who gave a strong statement on Twitter.

The gymnastics legend’s support came after Reese vented in a press conference after the match, how she was told that she didn’t fit in. An example of the negative public opinion that Reese implied through this conference was the usage of “classless” by fans to describe Reese’s actions. Sending out a strong message to critics through a single statement, Reese’s tweet received the support of Simone Biles and other popular personalities from the sports community.

Simone Biles retweeted Reese’s original tweet, “I LOVE BEING A BLACK QUEEN” on her Twitter account, subtly hinting at her support for the young basketball star. Biles retweet once again proves that she isn’t afraid to show what she really feels, similar to how she spoke out on the Black Lives Matter Protests.

Not only this but basketball player DaJuan Summers also showed his support for Reese by replying, “As you should! Congratulations! Baltimore salute.” Another basketball player who also reacted to Reese’s tweet was Christian Jones who retweeted Reese’s empowering tweet.

Earlier, NFL players Tyreek Hill and Ryan Clark also showed strong support after Reese’s controversy on their Twitter accounts. Football player Chad Johnson also commented in Reese’s favor. “No offense but if you dish at the end of games you have to be able to take it well.” The massive support by the sports community hints at how Reese’s narrative is gaining mass acceptance despite the initial backlash. Clark had performed a similar John Sena gesture against Louisville earlier while celebrating her performance where she accomplished a 40-point triple-double in the Elite Eight match. However, this action was noticed by Reese who bided her time to give a comeback to Clark.

Describing how Clark had disrespected Alexis (Moore) and ‘her’ South Carolina girls, Reese further added, “I don’t take disrespect lightly.” Earlier, Clark had waved off South Carolina player Raven Johnson, which many fans found disrespectful.
