Patrick Mahomes has entered the black book of many Kansas City Chiefs fans. The quarterback’s choice to slide instead of scoring a touchdown displeased many. The spread for the game against the New York Jets was that the Chiefs would win by more than a touchdown. Unfortunately, Mahomes spurned the chance to score a touchdown in the final seconds. The bettors did not win the millions that were on offer. Dave Portnoy has been among those who protested vociferously.

Mahomes was one of the main culprits as the Chiefs blew a 17-point lead. At one time a one-sided affair, the game ended 23-20 in favor of the Chiefs. They had to hold on for the win after a dominant first quarter. The Jets showed great spirit but were undone right at the end of the game. Patrick Mahomes’ decision to slide at the end received a lot of flak from Dave Portnoy, in particular. Portnoy acknowledged that, in that context, the quarterback made a reasonable choice. Simultaneously, he also hypothesized that Mahomes let his fans down.

Mahomes let down the fans

The self-styled ‘El Presidente’ pointed out that betting on sports is legal in Kansas. Plus, he noted that those in the Chiefs’ home state suffered thanks to Mahomes’ decision. He added that Patrick Mahomes stole money right out of the fans’ wallets. With him opting to not score the touchdown, according to Portnoy, many of the fans could not afford dinner.

Portnoy assumed that the Kansas City Chiefs were based in the state of Kansas. It was a reasonable enough assumption. There is a city called Kansas City in both Missouri and Kansas. The reactions to Portnoy’s tweet were far from conciliatory. They zeroed in on an error or two he had unwittingly committed.

Dave Portnoy picked the wrong Kansas

Unfortunately for Dave Portnoy, the home state of the Kansas City Chiefs is Missouri, as many fans pointed out. The state of Kansas, notably, does not have an NFL team.

Geography is clearly not Dave Portnoy’s strongest suit, as exemplified by many replies, including the following:

Missouri does not permit betting on sports, as another response noted. Portnoy was right about the situation in Kansas, however.

Portnoy took the name of the sports team and associated the wrong geographical location with it.

That would not be the only error made by Dave Portnoy. He had also misspelled the quarterback’s last name as the following response pointed out.

Yet another response noted that Dave Portnoy not knowing the home city of the Chiefs was typical of the man.

Judging by the responses, the Chiefs’ fans had a field day at Portnoy’s expense. It remains to be seen if he responds to these tweets.
