Shannon Sharpe knows from experience what it is to rub shoulders with an elite quarterback. Sharpe lined up alongside John Elway for the Denver Broncos from 1990 until the latter’s retirement in 1998. Together, the pair helped the Broncos win Super Bowls XXXII and XXXIII. Perhaps as a result, Sharpe has been vocal in his criticism of the supposition that every quarterback with a win under his belt must be elite.

Shannon Sharpe additionally posited not every quarterback enjoying two or three good games in succession is elite. In particular, Sharpe highlighted the debate surrounding San Francisco 49ers’ quarterback Brock Purdy’s status. He was in hot water with 49ers fans for suggesting Purdy did not belong in the ‘elite’ bracket. However, amidst all these talks, Sharpe got his statement seconded by an ex-NFL star.

Shannon Sharpe finds an ally who thinks elite quarterbacks have more to offer

Sharpe vehemently opposed calling Purdy elite. Co-host Chad Johnson proved to be a kindred soul in that regard for Shannon Sharpe. The pair discussed the subject on their show Nightcap, with that snippet presently doing the rounds on social media. In it, Sharpe clarified he had yet to see enough from Purdy to justify being put into that class of quarterback.

Chad Johnson, a former NFL star, concurred with Sharpe. Johnson referred to Patrick Mahomes’ skill set, saying it will be unaffected by the team of which he is a part. He added Mahomes would essentially be the same quarterback. His repertoire would be independent of that of his teammates, Johnson suggested. It is well known that Shannon Sharpe considered Mahomes an elite quarterback. Johnson further noted it was hard to make a similar judgment about Purdy.

The 49ers’ offense has a top tier player in every position

Chad Johnson added that the 49ers were blessed with a “top-tier” offense. Johnson admitted every position in that offensive line was occupied by an elite exponent. Shannon Sharpe agreed and listed a few quarterbacks he considered elite, in the form of Tom Brady and Peyton Manning. Johnson gave credit where it was due, mentioning there was something to be said for Purdy’s performances so far this season, with the 49ers 5-0 ahead of NFL Sunday.

On Sunday, however, Purdy had a game to forget against the Cleveland Browns. He completed roughly 44 percent of his attempted passes and threw his first interception of the season. In addition, he threw one touchdown pass as the 49ers lost 17-19. Chad Johnson noted that it was not out of the ordinary given he had faced a Jim Schwartz defense, the “real deal” as he put it. Shannon Sharpe agreed with that assessment as well.

Brock Purdy is only 23 years old. The quarterback is yet to clock a full season at this level. His record stands at 10 wins and one loss in NFL games he started for the 49ers. That is, across both the previous and the ongoing season. Incidentally, he was the last pick during the 2022 NFL draft. Regardless, only time will tell if Shannon Sharpe revises his estimation of Purdy.
