Dave Portnoy is a diehard New England Patriots fan. He has seen their highs and, most recently, their lows. To elaborate, six games into the new season, they were 1-5. That is the worst start to a season of general manager and head coach Bill Belichick’s career. The Tom Brady era that saw the Patriots win six Super Bowls is well and truly a thing of the past. His replacement at quarterback, Mac Jones, has often flattered to deceive.

Even so, Dave Portnoy has often rushed to Jones’ defense. The one-time Pro Bowl selection, Portnoy maintained, could win the Patriots the Super Bowl once more. Jones finally came up trumps in a clutch moment, to repay at least part of the faith placed in him. The 4-2 Buffalo Bills rolled into town to face the beleaguered Patriots. With 12 seconds left in the game, Jones threw a touchdown pass that turned the game in the Patriots’ favor.

The Patriots can ‘build around this quarterback’, as per Dave Portnoy

Dave Portnoy took to X, formerly called Twitter, to post a video celebrating the win and just a hint of vindication. Portnoy captioned the post with the words, “THE PATRIOTS ARE BACK! MAC IS BACK!” He reiterated his position that Mac Jones could win the Patriots a Super Bowl. Portnoy said, I’m not saying that we’re back, but we may be back. I don’t know if it’s good that we won or bad that we won because we’re still 2-5 but I’m telling you we can build around this quarterback. We can build around this quarterback!

Dave Portnoy pointed out the Bills were, as he put it, a “trendy pick” to win the Super Bowl. The self-styled El Presidente noted that was the team put to the sword by the Patriots. He also reserved words of praise for Mac Jones. Portnoy said, You give Mac the ball, you let him unleash it. He’s gonna go down. He outplayed Josh Allen the whole game. Patriots go take the Bills, a trendy pick to win the Super Bowl, we flush them down the toilet.” It was a landmark victory for the Patriots.

Bill Belichick inches closer to NFL record

Bill Belichick now has 300 regular season wins in the NFL. He became just the second head coach to achieve that feat after the legendary Don Shula. Among currently active coaches, Belichick leads the rest of the pack comfortably. He also holds the record for most post-season wins with 31. Belichick also extended his contract with the Patriots, a move that is sure to have Portnoy elated.

Dave Portnoy claimed, during their loss to the Las Vegas Raiders, the Patriots were back. That was after watching a drive he called worthy of a champion. Up next for them is a trip to Miami to face the Dolphins. It remains to be seen if Jones can replicate his match-winning performance against the current leaders of the AFC East.
