Shannon Sharpe has three Super Bowl rings. He won Super Bowls XXXII and XXXIII with the Denver Broncos. In addition, Sharpe was part of the famed 2000 Baltimore Ravens who won Super Bowl XXXV. Having spent the majority of his NFL career with the Broncos, it is understandable he still maintains an interest in his former franchise. With the current season five games old, Sharpe expressed concern over the current roster of the team from Colorado, particularly quarterback Russell Wilson.

The Broncos lost to the New York Jets at the Empower Field at Mile High on Sunday. At the end of the first half, they led the Jets 13-8, only to fall behind by five at the end of the third quarter. They ended up on the receiving end of a 31-21 loss. Russell Wilson led the way with two touchdown passes, including one in the fourth quarter. That brought the Broncos within touching distance of the Jets. The Jets then scored a touchdown with 29 seconds left, upsetting Sharpe.

Time for the Wilson-Payton “marriage” to end?

As Sharpe noted, head coach Sean Payton and Russell Wilson exchanged words on the sideline. He posited it might be time for that unhappy marriage to come to an end. With the 2023 trade deadline looming, Sharpe suggested it might be time for the Broncos to replace Wilson with Caleb Williams. He said to Chad Johnson on the Nightcap show, “The Broncos lose again to the Jets, Sean Payton and Russ exchange words on the sideline. Is this marriage going to end? Just try to go and get Caleb Williams?”

Further, Sharpe opined that Payton’s coaching style might not suit Russell Wilson. What with the Broncos’ financial outlay and trades so far, he noted they are in an unacceptable position during the regular season. He suggested that someone would have to walk the plank. Sharpe said, “Sean Payton coaches hard. Russ has never been coached like that. Three first-round picks, three second-round picks, a fifth-round pick, they gave him [Wilson] five years, $245 million. Sean Payton, five years, $100 million. And all this to be 1-4? Somebody got to go.”

Time up for Russell Wilson, per Shannon Sharpe

In fact, Sharpe opined Russell Wilson might be the one sacrificed. The massive contract notwithstanding, he suggested Wilson will probably be traded before the October 31 deadline. He said, “He [Wilson] not gonna be in Denver after this year.” Moreover, Sharpe stated that the Broncos do not have a chance with Russell Wilson in their ranks. The 55-year-old noted that he could outrun Wilson despite his advanced age.

He went as far as to say that Wilson’s kids, aged two and three years, could catch him if they were to give chase. Sharpe said, “What chance do the Broncos have? You watching Russ play. Russ can’t outrun me. He can’t run away from his kids. If his kids, his two- and three-year-olds start chasing him, they catch him.” After this ire, Russell Wilson’s fate remains to be seen.
