Almost every athlete has a signature celebration. To name but a few, there is Usain Bolt’s lightning bolt and Cristiano Ronaldo’s siuuu. The latter’s arch-rival Lionel Messi points to the skies to honor his deceased grandmother. Shedeur Sanders’ watch flex celebration is now the latest craze in that regard, as per Shannon Sharpe.

Shedeur Sanders, quarterback of the Colorado Buffaloes, is enjoying a superb season. The Buffaloes are 4-3 but Sanders is presently averaging three touchdowns a game. Sanders first pulled out the watch flex against the Nebraska Cornhuskers. They had stepped on the Colorado logo at Folsom Field during practice. The watch flex has taken on a life of its own ever since, as Shannon Sharpe and Chad Johnson noted.

Shedeur Sanders uses his celebration to get back at his critics. His father, Deion Sanders, was known for his flashy Rolex during his playing days, according to Sporting News. Shedeur Sanders appears to be carving out a similar legacy for himself with the $70,000 watch he earned. The quarterback’s gesture is now the talk of the town. Many established names, even celebrities, have copied it ever since.

Sharpe and co-host Chad ‘Ocho’ Johnson conversed, on their show Nightcap, about signature celebrations. The former recognized Sanders as the first one to celebrate with a watch flex but added many others who have used the same. Sharpe listed rapper Rick Ross and record producer DJ Khaled among those to follow suit. He added other NFL players Breece Hall, Garrett Wilson, and Davante Adams to that growing list. The celebration has also made its way to the NBA with Chet Holmgren.

Just like T.O.’s dancing in the end zone, per Shannon Sharpe

Johnson recognized it was not just the celebration that made Shedeur Sanders stand out. According to him, Sanders is also making a statement every time he sets foot on the field. In fact, during his most recent game, a 46-43 double overtime loss to Stanford Cardinal, Sanders threw five touchdowns. Chad Johnson added anything unconventional is likely to upset a sizeable chunk of the population.

Shannon Sharpe compared the watch flex celebration to Terrell Owens’ dances in the end zone. Sharpe concurred the celebratory dances would annoy those on the receiving end. Yet, the simple solution to that quandary lay in keeping Owens away from the end zone, he posited. Chad Johnson agreed with his take on that subject. The pair also moved swiftly to shut down suggestions Sanders was bragging about money via this celebration. With so much talk around the town regarding this, all that remains is to see how popular this celebration becomes.
