Stephen A. Smith divides opinion. One of the hosts of ESPN’s First Take, Smith is not known for holding back. He was recently critical of Dallas Cowboys quarterback Dak Prescott. Ahead of their game against the San Francisco 49ers, Smith predicted Prescott would throw two interceptions. He threw three. That did not endear Smith to the Cowboys’ fans.

More recently, though, he opened up about his own mental health struggles following Prescott’s admission. The quarterback confessed to having suffered from depression after losing his brother, Jace. Stephen A.Smith knew the feeling due to his own personal experience. Smith lost his mother, Janet, to cancer and was no longer the same. Prescott also lost his mother, Peggy, to cancer. On his eponymous show, Smith admitted he required therapeutic intervention after that loss. While Smith opted to go easier on Prescott, the fans did not go easy on him.

Smith upbeat despite hostile reception from Cowboys fans

In fact, when he was seen near the sideline at the SoFi Stadium, he received a response commensurate with the crowd’s perception. He had predicted a humiliation coming the way of the Cowboys before the game. As he walked by the sideline, Stephen A. Smith waved to the crowd while those in Cowboys jerseys booed him. Smith took to X, formerly known as Twitter, to post a clip of the same. He interacted with the fans nearest to him, but that did not go well.

Smith responded to the booing with a comment that could barely be heard above the disapproving crowd. He said, “This is what happens when you know.” Post that, he attempted to converse with a child in the stands. The child sported a Cowboys jersey. Moreover, his parent appeared to be pointing at Stephen A. Smith and saying something not quite flattering. Smith did not enjoy that. He believed it was uncalled for.

What lies ahead for the beleaguered Cowboys?

Regardless, ahead of the showdown in Los Angeles with the Chargers, the Cowboys were 3-2. The 49ers administered them a thorough licking last week, winning 42-10. On the other hand, the Chargers posted 2-2 numbers so far this NFL season. They came into this clash off the back of a 24-17 win against the Las Vegas Raiders at the same venue.

Next week, the Cowboys meet the Los Angeles Rams on home turf. The Rams are 3-3 this NFL season. A trip to Missouri awaits the Chargers, with the 5-1 Kansas City Chiefs their next opponents.

Stephen A. Smith is no stranger to criticism. He has received his fair share of the same throughout his career. Smith also doles out plenty in a bid to earn a living. While his prediction came true and was then exceeded, it remains to be seen if history repeats itself a week hence. Either way, he is unlikely to try to appease the incensed Cowboys fans.
