The Chicago Blackhawks are gearing up to take on the San Jose Sharks at the SAP Center. Upon closer examination of the standings, one may observe their position at the bottom of the Western Conference. Neither team has managed to achieve standout performances this season, but at this juncture, the focus shifts away from their potential to reach the Stanley Cup playoffs. So, what’s all the excitement about the game? First and foremost, it’s hockey! What about the second?

According to Blackhawks on CHSN on X, “Just a couple first overall draft picks going head-to-head tonight.” Who are these two rookies? All eyes will be on Connor Bedard of the Hawks and Macklin Celebrini of the Sharks. These two will certainly attract significant attention, but what is the reason behind it?

Let’s examine their professional journeys. Bedard has spent two seasons with the Hawks, appearing in 133 games, during which he has netted 39 goals, provided 74 assists, and totaled 113 points. Let’s examine Celebrini closely. The forward has participated in 54 games with the Sharks, during which he has netted 20 goals, provided 28 assists, and totaled 48 points. However, the issue at hand?

As is often the case, blame was directed towards the broadcasting sector. Since last year, Hawks fans have been receiving footage from the Chicago Sports Network (CHSN). The network took over from NBC Sports Chicago but has faced challenges in obtaining coverage from major cable providers, particularly Comcast/Xfinity.

In an effort to address these issues, CHSN formed partnerships with DirecTV and FuboTV; however, the challenges continued to persist. Has there been a shift in the fans’ perspective? Not exactly.

The Chicago Blackhawks fans aren’t happy

Hockey enthusiasts often display a deep emotional connection to the game. It’s a universally acknowledged truth. The inability to witness a highly anticipated game featuring these rookies is a significant blow to the fanbase. A fan expressed their longing, stating, “damn I wish I could watch it….” A fan expressed their frustration, stating, “Too bad the Blackhawks make it difficult to watch.” Another supporter remarked, “Great. Unable to watch. Thanks a lot.”

Recall the moment when CHSN president Jason Coyle made a commitment? He stated, “We are excited to offer Chicago sports fans a one-of-a-kind digital product enabling immediate access to live games and a complement of personalized, on-demand content.” His vision extended beyond just hockey for the Chicago audience, as these subscription packages provided access to the league games of all three teams (Bulls, Blackhawks, White Sox), available with the purchase of the $29.99 package.

However, the fans remain dissatisfied, as one expressed, “Wish I could watch but I have @Xfinity.” In a similar vein, another supporter inquired, “Did @CHSN__ get on @Xfinity yet so we can watch them? I bet the Sharks fans can watch their team…” In just a few hours, the Hawks are set to take the ice at the SAP Center to face off against the Sharks. Only time will reveal whether these broadcasting issues will be resolved.
