The NHL season has been intense and for some fans, the intrigue isn’t just on the ice but in the Canucks’ locker room. It is normal to have tension between teammates, but when it is between players like J.T. Miller and Elias Pettersson, it becomes quite uncomfortable. And Canucks president Jim Rutherford finally gave voice to what everyone perhaps already knew but didn’t want to admit.

And here is what takes the cake. Rutherford was quick to note that the Canucks do not have any intentions of trading either player; however, there is tension. He doesn’t believe that the situation will improve simply because the team begins to emerge as a winner. “Does that make the players feel better? Does that make these two individuals feel better?… All those factors play into the decision.” That’s a bitter pill to swallow, especially when GM Patrik Allvin was very clear that there are no trades brewing involving Pettersson. But now, with Rutherford admitting, “We don’t want to trade these players. But we may very well be forced to,” it’s safe to say that trade chatter—especially around J.T. Miller—is about to hit a whole new level.

J.T. Miller has been traded?

The trade chatter around the Canucks star just went from whispers to full-blown sirens, and it’s all thanks to a couple of hockey insiders dropping bombshells on X. Frank Seravalli, the man with all the inside scoops, spilled the details first, revealing, “Sounds like other #Canucks pieces and prospects are going with Miller to #NYR as part of a package. Larger deal this time around.”

Minutes before Servalli gave the scoop, senior NHL columnist Pierre LeBrun took to X: “J.T. Miller has been asked to waive his no-trade for a trade to the New York Rangers. Source says the answer will be yes to that.” And it so happens that the source was right! According to reports, the Vancouver side is not going to retain anything on Miller’s $8 million contract. And as for the other “pieces” that are moving to the Rangers are Erik Brannstrom and Jackson Dorrington. On the flip side, the Canucks will welcome Czechia center Filip Chytil and defenseman 22-year-old blue-liner Victor Mancini. Additionally, per ESPN’s Emily Kaplan, a top-13 protected first-round draft pick is also being traded to the Canucks.

So as it stands, Miller, who got traded to the Canucks’ from the Bolts for goalie Marek Mazanec will be traveling to newer pastures leaving his feud with Pettersson behind. But the Canucks weren’t exactly eager to part ways with their star forward. In fact, they tried to smooth things over, patch up the rift, and keep the squad intact.

Canucks tried their best!

J.T. Miller and Elias Pettersson have been teammates since 2020, so this wasn’t some overnight fallout—it was years in the making. The Canucks did everything in their power to smooth things over, patch up the rift, and keep the squad intact. Even President Rutherford held onto hope for a while, thinking things could be fixed. But it seems like all of that was for nothing.

“I felt like for a long time that there was a solution here because everybody has worked on it, including the parties involved,” revealed the president. However, hope can only take you so far, especially when the conflict is deeply rooted. And so, the cracks remained. Rutherford admitted that at times “emotions get deep” and despite efforts, people can’t “get over it,” making it clear that this breakup was inevitable.

With no resolution in sight, the Canucks have finally pulled the trigger on a trade. And just like that, J.T. Miller is heading to a new home, while the Canucks prepare themselves for a new beginning. So, what do you think about this deal? Drop your thoughts in the comments!
