The Edmonton 911 operator made the revelation to CTV News. The news outlet reported that among the more “odd” calls 911 operators received last year were fans inquiring which channel they could watch the Oilers on. After the report, the Oilers themselves couldn’t resist appealing to fans not to call emergency services, asking about broadcast and scheduling.

“While we certainly appreciate that level of urgency & passion, please DO NOT CALL 911 to get the #Oilers schedule & broadcast info!” the official Edmonton Oilers handle posted on X. “We’ve got it for you right here,” added the team. They provided a link to the Oilers’ schedule page on their website, which has information one needs about upcoming (and past) Oilers games.

While this oddity from last year may sound amusing to read, there’s a good reason the Oilers amplified the news and street that fans shouldn’t call 911. The simplest way to put it would be such calls harm the availability and response times of emergency services like 911. Edmonton Police Service’s emergency communications director, Kay Anderson, agrees.

“It’s important for people to remember that every one of those 911 calls is taking away from what could be a real emergency,” said Anderson. This was especially apparent last year as operators dealt with over 1000 calls per day. While Anderson admitted to everyone getting “a chuckle” out of such calls, he discouraged such behavior.
