As if there hasn’t been enough brutal collisions and fights in the NHL, these two teams decided to further add to the tally. The violence that erupted yesterday was particularly appalling for the whole NHL community. Because of the manner in which it started, even regular NHL fans who are accustomed to seeing such brawls on a frequent basis, are condemning the act.

Tampa Bay Lightning vs Buffalo Sabres was a game that had wild scenes written all over it throughout the game. However, exactly around the halfway mark of the game, it got even wilder. Fans had no inhibitions in calling out both these teams for their actions as a “dirty attempt.

Sabres will look ahead of this fight, but NHL fans picked on the Tampas not too kindly

“Needless to say, a Sabres/Lightning playoff series would be WILD”, read the caption of the Facebook post by Sportsnet. It didn’t take long for all the comments to pile on under it. The game was evenly poised at 1–1 after the first period. And with 11 minutes in the second period, Buffalo Sabres took a slight lead. This is when all hell broke loose.

After more than a few Lightning players jumped on Dahlin, the Sabres fought back. The brawl didn’t immediately settle and lasted for up to a minute. The Sabres, who are high on the heels of their 41-year-old goaltender Craig Anderson’s new NHL record against the Florida Panthers, came in hot in this game too.

Eager to equalize, Anthony Cirelli of Lightning, charged forward with the puck toward the goalpost. Out of nowhere came Rasmus Dahlin with a spectacular defense that stopped him. Neither did Cirelli nor the entire Tampa Bay Lightning take kindly to that. Suddenly, it was mayhem on the ice rink.

Despite the intense fight, it didn’t let them derail in their path to victory. The Sabres beat the Lightning by a 5–3 margin, as they continue their winning spree from the last few games. They beat Washington Capitals (7–4) and Florida Capitals (3–1) in their previous two outings. But whether they redeem themselves from yesterday’s brutal act, only time will tell.
