Laird Hamilton revealed that self-introspection could lead to self-obsession

The surfing legend revealed that surfer’s approach changes as they move to the later parts of their career. He discussed with his partner that the initial success feels amazing. Hamilton said, “I talked to my friend Paul, and we discussed how we like the early parts of the curve from beginner to professional”. However, with the passage of time, the desperation for achieving small targets starts to kick in.

Laird Hamilton further added that this desperation leads people to introspect about their skills and goals. People get confused about the idea of trusting the process and the temptation to try out new things. He added, “You think that’s (conventional techniques) going to make you better or being flexible makes you better” The introspection sometimes turned out to be a self-obsession and develop a self-centric attitude in players.

The ‘Waterman’ also added that this attitude is bound to develop in those who are dedicated to improving themselves. Hamilton said, “I think to not be a narcissist and to not have an ego, it’s impossible”.

Paul Hamilton said that obsession helps players to try out new things and facilitates the excellence of individuals. However, it depends on the way one utilizes such intuitions. “You got to be willing to be a beginner”, he added. Paul states that the approach toward the challenges is the most important thing. One should make constructive use of egoistic feelings.
