Track and field legend Shoji Tomihisa has demonstrated that age is no barrier. Starting his athletics journey at the age of 97, he left the world in awe with his high-spiritedness toward sports. Atomic bomb survivor Tomihisa was one of the oldest runners selected as a torchbearer for the 2020 Tokyo Olympic Games. At the age of 102, Tomihisa received an invitation to take part in a torch relay in Hiroshima, Japan.
Due to his waning physical strength, 100 and 60m record holder Shoji chose to end his competitive career at the age of 105. Only one month after his retirement, the track and field legend died. However, he left an ever-lasting impression on the world with his legacy. His throwback video is making headlines, inspiring the youth with his great determination and strong willpower.

Establishing a national record for Japan in the men’s 100~104 age category, Shoji Tomihisa became the most accomplished track and field star, setting a new record by clocking in at 16.98 seconds in 60 meters at the 2017 Chugoku Masters Track and Field meet. As Tomihisa created history with his outstanding performance at the age of 102, the official X handle @historyinmemes, also cherished the oldest sprinter spirit. Shoji Tomihisa exhibited his notable sprinting skills by competing in a 100-meter race. Tomihisa plan to run as a torchbearer in the Olympic Games was marred by the coronavirus outbreak as the relay on public roads was called off. Despite that, Tomihisa never stopped and continued to galvanize the world with his great enthusiasm and ambitions. Commenting on his throwback video, social media users couldn’t help but admire the zeal of Tomihisa.
Taking to his Twitter handle one of the fans admired Shoji Tomihisa’s exceptional skills at the age of 102, writing, “He must be a martial art specialist in his young age.” Another fan also appreciated the oldest sprinter’s victorious triumph at this age, commenting “He is the winner.”
