International Paralympics Committee Calls for Peace as Para Athletes Participation at Upcoming Beijing Winter Paralympics 2022 in Doubts

Amidst the conflict between Russia and Ukraine, world peace is going through tough times. It’s affecting not only the countries involved in the crisis but also the entire world order. Sadly, the situation is also affecting the Beijing Winter Paralympics 2022 which is going to take place next month from March 4th, 2022 to March 13, 2022.
Ukraine and Russia both are a part of the 193 Member States of the Olympics. However, the conflict has raised serious trouble regarding the athletes’ safety and their participation in the Beijing Winter Paralympics 2022. It would be a difficult task for the International Paralympic Committee (IPC) to manage all the proceedings. With the two nations involved in the conflict; people are getting eager to know how will they move forward with it.

IPC condemns Russia’s breach of the Olympic Truce
The International Paralympic Committee (IPC) along with the International Olympic Committee (IOC) has condemned Russia’s breach of the Olympic Truce before the Beijing Winter Paralympics. Given that the Olympics symbolizes friendship, peace, and reconciliation amongst nations, IPC and IOC will strive forth to achieve it through sports.

IPC’s president Andrew Parsons has stated, “This is a truly horrible situation, and we are greatly concerned about our National Paralympic Committee and Para athletes from Ukraine.”
He further said, “Our top priority right now is the safety and well-being of the Ukrainian delegation, with whom we are in regular dialogue. Earlier today I spoke with Valeriy Sushkevych, the President of the Ukrainian Paralympic Committee, who informed me that his Para athletes wish to compete in Beijing, however getting the team to Beijing is going to be a mammoth challenge.”

IPC has allowed Russian athletes to compete in the Beijing Paralympics
Though the IOC has condemned the crisis between the two nations; However, the Russian athletes will be allowed to take part in the Beijing Paralympics. There are 71 athletes from Russia who’ll be taking part in the competition. “As a politically neutral organisation, the IPC’s focus remains on the upcoming Games rather than the ongoing situation,” said IPC.

The IOC and IPC have also requested both the nations to honor the Olympic Truce in this time of crisis. However, all eyes would be on both the committee to see how they tackle this extremely serious situation.
