According to the latest news, Malaysian actress Michelle Yeoh is set to join the International Olympic Committee. The 61-year-old actress featured on the list of the eight new members proposed to join the IOC on 8th September.

The unbreakable bond with the Olympics

Michelle Yeoh made her way to the prestigious realm of Hollywood with sheer hard work and passion. She earned her first major break after working in the famous James Bond flick, ‘Tomorrow Never Dies.’ This role led her to several other great films, including Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon, Sunshine, The Lady, and many more. Yeoh recently became the first Asian to win the Oscar in early 2023 for Everything Everywhere All at Once. She has achieved a lot in the world of films. However, a few people know that she used to be a sportsperson as well. In fact, she was a junior squash champion in Malaysia.

The phenomenal actress will now ascend and become a member of the International Olympic Committee. The IOC will ratify her membership at its next session, which will be held in Mumbai, India. The committee also nominated other notable figures like Israel’s first Olympic medalist Yael Arad, and German sports entrepreneur Michael Mronz. The list also included Hungarian sports administrator Balazs Furjes and former Olympic volleyball silver medalist from Peru, Cecilia Roxana Tait Villacorta. IOC’s President, Thomas Bach said these candidates were nominated for “their experience and diverse expertise in different walks of life.” Michelle Yeoh truly embodies this criteria. In fact, she was also nominated by several other bodies for her versatility.

The dynamism and versatility of Michelle Yeoh

Michelle Yeoh will soon embark on the board of the prestigious Olympic body of the IOC. While she was a squash player in her younger days, her career in films didn’t stop her athletic nature. Michelle Yeoh became famous for her blockbuster action movies, where she performed her own stunts. In fact, Rotten Tomatoes recognized her for her stellar action sequences and ranked her the greatest action heroine of all time in 2008.

Her dynamism didn’t just end at action movies. She worked across several genres in titles like Crazy Rich Asians, The Witcher: Blood Origin, and Shang Chi. The influence she carried increased considerably every year. Moreover, Time Magazine ranked her in its 2022 list of most influential people. It is this dynamism that Yeoh possessed that united her with the Olympics as an IOC member. The world is looking forward to her actions, as it eagerly awaits the Olympics that stand 321 days away.
