Always considering speed disciplines as ‘scary’, the 28-year-old Olympian left the world concerned despite being stable. But there’s her beau finally back in Innsbruck after something nightmarish.

Aleksander Kilde, Shiffrin’s long-term partner, had faced a rather disconcerting injury at the Wengen Downhill event. With a carousel of photos, he broke down his slow but steady progress over weeks. “going to the bathroom by myself”, “FaceTiming @mikaelashiffrin”, “healing from shoulder surgery” may sound plain to the layperson, but these little steps to recovery meant the world to Kilde.

Mikaela Shiffrin’s Midas touch on Kilde’s life has taken a new form during his healing timeline. The most decorated alpine skiing athlete was busy collecting laurels and managing girlfriend duties simultaneously. But Kilde’s fans have also been very supportive while he struggled to function with his mental and physical faculties afloat amid injury.
