Champion skier Eileen Gu does a lot more than skiing freestyle through snowy slopes, flaunting her athleticism. The 19-year-old juggles sport, modeling, and college studies like a pro. When she’s not busy traveling across the world for her job, she amuses herself with various domains of her academics.

Gu, who contests for China, is a student at Stanford University. While the freestyle skier’s interests are endless, she sat down with the official Olympics website team to talk about her special inclination. This interest not only constitutes the way she views skiing but is also her major at college. What could the domain be?

Eileen Gu embraces physics off-field

Having recently met iconic astrophysicist Neil deGrasse Tyson, one should’ve figured out the young skier’s interests. While Eileen Gu defies gravity with her flips and turns in the air, she fell in love with physics and its principles in the process. As a freshman at Stanford University, Gu has picked Quantum Physics as one of her subjects.

In the interview, Gu gushed about her newfound love for the subject and how it sets a challenge. At a young age, the skier has already made it to the list of the top richest female athletes in the world. And now, as she manages skiing, modeling, and education, the athlete is in awe of the working of science.

Speaking about life beyond the snow-clad mountains, Gu exclaimed, “Outside of skiing I am a huge nerd!”. As she noted the irony of how she sets out to defy the odds of physics in her sport, she believed that’s exactly what attracts her to both the subject and skiing. “In my own way, when I’m skiing, I guess I’m bending the laws of what’s possible in the first place” she added. And she once flaunted her interests in front of fans when she met the renowned astrophysicist.

Sharing a snapshot of the moment on her Instagram story, Gu wrote, “Just talked to @neildegrasstyson about neutron degeneracy pressure don’t text me I’ll be recovering for a few days”. With interactions like this, it looks like Gu got a good kickstart to her career and academics!
