Serena Williams, the GOAT of tennis, is popular for her fierce and powerful serves and the tenacity she displays in the game. Several celebrities came to show their support for the renowned tennis player during her final series at the US Open before retiring. Lindsey Vonn, the Olympics alpine skiing racer turned businesswoman and NYT bestselling author, appeared to cheer her too.

Vonn’s presence at the event and her tweets following the finals suggest that she admires Serena and recognizes her excellence besides being good friends. Although the two legendary players are from different sports, one can’t help but find similarities in their traits. Fair to say, they both are strong-willed and go-getters.

One would be interested to learn about an instance of Vonn backing Willaims’ actions in a 2019 controversy.

Serena Williams and the French Interview Controversy

Sofia Kenin defeated the iconic Serena Williams in the 2019 French Open. In the post-match interview, Dominic Thiem’s speech to the German-speaking section was interrupted midway. Following this, he was asked to leave the interview room to switch to a smaller one as Serena Williams was in a rush to give the interview. 

In light of this event, the reporter asked Lindsey what she thought about it. Her response came spontaneously, “I think she’s a bad*ss and she can probably say whatever she wants.” The reporter went on to ask whether her behavior was right, and she calmly said, “I didn’t see it. I don’t know but…she’s the queen.” 

Her demeanor displayed that she was not surprised by the event and also gave an unsaid approval to her dominance.

Although the reporter tried different ways to question Vonn on her opinion, she was firm on her take which ultimately answered his questions.

Vonn aspired to do what Serena did

In an interview in 2018, Vonn emphasized how Williams’ games have empowered women and broadened their perspective. “She raised the game. She made power in women’s tennis an asset.”, the skiing great said in an interview.

These two fearless stars have proved that anyone can make strenuous efforts to achieve greatness. Also, they never hesitated to take risks. Being dynamic and powerful and creating speed where nobody can, are a few lessons she learned from the tennis giant. And the rest is history.

It is undeniable that legend Williams ruled the game single-handedly and empowered women in sports. She shall remain the “The Greatest of All Time. Period” as tweeted by Vonn.
