Retirement from any sporting discipline requires a bit of an adjustment. No longer is urgent adherence to that intense schedule, combining training and recovery, essential. If the sport in question spiked the adrenaline regularly, going without is a strange, new phenomenon for the athlete. In an interview with The Guardian, five-time Olympian Shaun White termed retirement an ugly word.

White retired from professional snowboarding in 2022. He announced his intent to hang up his boots following the Winter Olympics that year in Beijing. The next thing he did was to look for his next act. As part of that, inspired by the documentary Arnold, about Arnold Schwarzenegger, he helped put out a three-part docuseries on his life. Shaun White: The Last Run traces his journey from childhood to retirement. That was not the only arena he planned in which to venture.

Apart from the docuseries, he also released his autobiography, Shaun White: Airborne. Moreover, he runs Whitespace, a sporting gear company, with his brother Jesse. Whitespace recently put out their new women’s performance wear line. That will be followed by a new assortment of men’s apparel to be released before the end of this month. White’s significant other, actress Nina Dobrev, gave the move her stamp of approval as she uploaded a brand video on her Instagram story. It featured White modeling his latest men’s line.

The advertisement also appeared on Shaun White’s Instagram profile. In the comments there, Nina Dobrev added the word “Hot” and followed it with a heart-on-fire emoji. White admitted the brand had found its identity while seeking to marry high-level performance and fashion. Apart from the apparel, Whitespace is also known for snowboarding gear such as boards and goggles. White saw the expansion into women’s apparel as the next logical step for his company. One might gather Dobrev’s approval of both the decision and the resulting designs.

The pairing also endured the quarantine during the COVID-19 pandemic together. They have come a long way since then. Shaun White mused Whitespace was a way to stay in touch with his sport following his retirement, according to CBS Sports. It remains to be seen just how well the new line is received.
