The world is gearing up for the biggest sports extravaganza of them all, the Paris Olympics 2024, happening in July this year. The nations are prepared and eager for the event, with their athletes also fully geared up. However, Russia, on the other hand, has been barred by the International Olympic Committee (IOC) from participating in the French competitions.

It is their unresolved dispute with their neighboring nation, Ukraine, that has led the IOC to take the step. Nonetheless, in a recent turn of events, there are reports surrounding the sports world that the Eurasian nation is making arrangements to host its own summer games, which are said to be a replica of the Olympic Games.

Olympics.com has published reports on their official website affirming the claims that Russia is not complying with the fundamental principles of the Olympic Charter and UN General Assembly resolutions, which have also been accepted by all the member nations of the UN. “The Russian government intends to organize purely politically motivated sports events in Russia,” is what the IOC has stated. In a further statement, the IOC affirmed that the Russian government has funded and established the “International Friendship Association (IFA)” to host the “Friendship Games.”

The latter competition will witness both the summer and winter editions, and the maiden summer spectacle of it will be hosted in Moscow and Ekaterinburg, Russia, this year in September, whereas the winter edition will be organized in Sochi, Russia, in 2026. The Vladimir Putin led nation is also making significant updates so as to ensure the successful staging of the Paris Olympics 2024 alternative.

There is more to the story than meets the eye

To meet their objectives, the Russian administration has propelled an extensive diplomatic campaign that includes official delegations, ambassadors, ministerial officials, and other officials approaching nations around the world. The Olympics website has claimed these updates are a “violation of the Olympic Charter and an infringement of the various UN resolutions.”

The website also claimed that Russia is trying to politicize sports, and the IOC Athletes’ Commission, which is a representative of the athletes from around the world, has objected to the same.
