It has been 50 years since martial artist turned actor Bruce Lee left the world. However, fans globally never fail to protect Lee’s fame. A major credit for Lee’s success goes to his impactful films.  Interestingly, Bruce Lee, who was a Cantonese speaker, gained great success with his films in Mandarin. The global superstar had a smart way of filming his movies which were without sound.

Cantonese-speaking Bruce Lee appeared flawlessly in his Mandarin films.  However, the presentation of Lee speaking the standard Chinese language required great efforts by his filmmaking team. In his iconic “Lost” interview, Lee revealed surprising details of his movies that no one could have guessed then.

Bruce Lee opened up about how he spoke Mandarin in his films

In Bruce Lee’s iconic Lost interview in 1994, the actor opened up on several unknown facts about his personal and professional life. At the beginning of the interview, Lee laughed when he was introduced as a Mandarin actor.

He revealed that he spoke only Cantonese. However, his films in Mandarin did not give the slightest hint about it. To make the unthinkable happen, Lee revealed, “Well first of all I speak only Cantonese yeah so I mean there is quite a difference as far as pronunciation and things like that.” The surprised interviewer guessed that someone must have dubbed in Mandarin for Bruce Lee. To this Lee, agreed, saying, “definitely definitely.”

The interviewer asked Lee how he felt seeing someone else speaking on-screen for him. The latter revealed that most films are dubbed before getting released. Lee said,”I mean they shoot without sound so it doesn’t you know make any difference.”. However, the most difficult situation while shooting his films was to eliminate the difference in the dialect between Cantonese and Mandarin language, on-screen. Lee revealed that in order to do that, he had to find words similar to Mandarin that were easy for dubbing.

Lee broke racial and cultural stereotypes through his films. The American audiences who believed that action required guns and weapons saw a different perspective when Lee fought effortlessly using his training in martial arts. Nevertheless, his films like Enter the Dragon, Way of the Dragon, Fist of Fury urged the audience to train in Lee’s footsteps.
