The Navajo Nation is the largest Native American reservation in the United States. Known for its stunning natural landscapes, it stands as a testament to the sacred connection the Navajo people have with their ancestral lands.

It is also home to one of the most accomplished junior boxers in America. A true rising star in the ring with a dream to etch her name in boxing history. After clinching seven national titles and winning 14 state championships, her relentless pursuit for the 2024 Paris Olympics continues unabated.

Mariah’s enlistment in the Marines: One Step Closer to Glory

According to the Arizona Marines official Facebook account, Mariah Bahe enlisted in the Marines on May 19. 2022. She plans to join the All-Marines Boxing Team with the ultimate goal of competing in the Olympics.

The All-Marine Sports program extends its invitation to outstanding Marine athletes who aspire to undergo rigorous training and engage in competitive pursuits. Among these dedicated athletes, only a select few may ascend to the pinnacle of competition.

They can then participate in prestigious events like the Armed Forces Championships, National Championships, Military World Games, and of course, the illustrious Olympic Games. Mariah’s up-and-coming story was covered in a short documentary, Mariah: A Boxer’s Dream, directed by Nina Meredith. It premiered on April 1, 2021 and is currently available to stream on the Olympic Channel. Another documentary feature on Mariah Bahe called Native America “Going for Gold” is set to air on October 31, 2023 on PBS.

If Maria Bahe succeeds, she will be the first female Native American to stand proudly on the Olympic podium, medal in hand. Bahe’s boxing lineage is deeply rooted in her family’s history. Her grandfather, J. Cal Bahe, a dedicated U.S. Marine, embarked on his boxing journey at 15. His formative years in the ring took shape at the then-Damon Boxing Gym, guided by the mentorship of his uncle, Lee Damon.

In the wake of Damon’s passing in 1980, Cal Bahe pivoted to coaching in a touching tribute. Six years down the road, he took the initiative to establish the Damon-Bahe Boxing gym in the heart of Chinle, Arizona. He imparted his boxing wisdom to the next generation, including his own son, Mariah’s father, John C. Bahe Jr.

Today, the legacy endures with Mariah, a testament to the enduring spirit of boxing that continues to unite this remarkable family across generations. Her dad preferred her to go into cheerleading or volleyball as a child. However, she demonstrated her boxing skills at the tender age of five and has been training in the family gym under Coach Dad ever since. The coach proudly wears a “Team Princess” t-shirt.
