Unearthed Video Shows Boxing Legend Floyd Mayweather Being Inconsolable after Losing Olympic Match to Three-Time Champion in 1996

Floyd Mayweather Jr, the former American professional boxer, has had one of the most illustrious boxing careers. A tenure that lasted from 1996 to 2015, Floyd briefly returned to the arena for a crossover fight with MMA giant Conor McGregor. Winning the night, Floyd vowed never to come back in the ring for a fight.

In the famous  1996 Olympics, Floyd breezed himself into the semi-finals. However, the final results of the featherweight category in Atlanta were not something that Floyd expected.

The match that made Floyd Mayweather cry

19-year-old Mayweather secured a comfortable place in the semi-finals. Thus, when matched up against the three-time World Champion Serafim Todorov, Floyd’s match was going to be easy.

Throughout the match, Mayweather kept up his pace. Giving no scope for Todorov to fight back. The 19-year-old outboxed the World Champ over three rounds. What was supposed to be an expected result went down in history as one of the most “controversial decisions.”

The decision, much to everyone’s dismay, favored Floyd’s opponent. When the final score of 9-10 was revealed, Floyd could not believe it. The disappointed boxer could not hold up his tears in the post-match interview. Battling his emotions, the youngster could hardly say, “I felt I won the fight.”

The last defeat of Mayweather’s career

The 1996 Olympics was a turning point for Floyd’s career. In an unfortunate turn of events, the judges favored the Bulgarian boxer. In the post-match interview, when Floyd was asked, “do you feel like he got some consideration from the judging?”

The young champ could control his tears no longer. Visibly distraught and heartbroken, he left. However, that moment changed his life course forever. Working harder, the young lad made his mind up to give the best of the best in the ring. Describing the moment as “one of the best things that ever happened,” he went on to create history.
