“But I Switched”- WNBA Star Sue Bird Explains How She Prolonged Her Career Entering 19th Season

Sue Bird is a name that all WNBA fans are familiar with. A generational star, the New York Point Guard is a force to be reckoned with.

The 41-year-old plays, or rather, performs spectacularly. Sue does it all on the court, from no-look passes to a teammate, hitting them in perfect stride, to clutch jump shots that pass cleanly through the basket.

Athletes stretching out their careers like a resistance band has become the new norm. At 41, Sue bird is another example in a long list. She has won five Olympic Gold medals and four WNBA championships in a career spanning over 3 decades. Bird now faces her 19th season in the WNBA with the only team she’s known in the franchise, Seattle Storm.

In a podcast, ‘We Can Do Hard Things with Glennon Doyle,‘ Sue and her partner, Megan Rapinoe, made an appearance. The basketball star’s decision to play another season in the WNBA was also brought up.

“Have you treated your body perfectly, forever?” was the question posed to Bird. “I didn’t do this forever, but I switched,” she replied. Adding on, Sue told that she changed her workout regimes and hired a personal trainer “roughly 6 years ago.”

This helped her not to decline in her career. Bird also said that as one gets older, they are just smarter and more experienced, so one can use that as long as their body’s there. “People talk about Father Time, I’m like I’m just trying to tie him.”

Bird and Rapinoe’s relationship

Megan Rapinoe and Sue Bird have openly been in a relationship for over 5 years. The couple got engaged in October 2020 and their marriage speculations have caught wind since. Apart from being elite athletes, they are also a social activist couple.

They have taken a stand against prejudice and injustice throughout their careers. The couple also launched a campaign called ‘Love is- Uninterrupted’ through which they try to raise awareness about anti-LGBTQ violence and bullying.
