Tragedy Unleashed: The Heartbreaking Demise of Horses at Camarero Racetrack

Camarero Racetrack, once a hub of sports activity, has devolved into a depressing haven for ill and abused horses. Profit has trumped the inherent value of life in this country. Surprisingly, an average of 280 horses each year are tragically killed after suffering catastrophic injuries during races or abandoned in their stalls, their noble spirits destroyed. The astounding toll of nearly 700 horses slaughtered between 2020 and 2023, their dignity stripped away as they lie in a mass cemetery alongside the racecourse, underscores the depth of this evil.

Strike Swiftly, a mare from Jaime Toro’s Establo Bulls Farm, is one of these heartbreaking tales. Her destiny was sealed 48 hours after her 14th race in 11 months when she was killed by her owner because she was no longer lucrative. This story of abuse reflects a wider trend of horses being dumped when their economic worth declines, revealing the structural difficulties afflicting the equestrian industry.

Despite assurances of control and monitoring, the industry’s reality portrays a different image. The Puerto Rico Gaming Commission, charged with these magnificent creatures’ wellbeing, has failed in its stewardship. Inadequate pre-race exams, done by inexperienced veterinarians just three days before races, do not assure the safety of these horses. The result is disastrous, resulting in serious injuries and, regrettably, euthanasia for many.

United Voices: Equestrian Activists Demand Reform

This tragic issue deserves immediate response, prompting us to band together as equestrian welfare activists. We must stand united in the face of profit-driven exploitation, demanding strong laws, ethical care, and a future in which every horse is valued, safeguarded, and adored. The urgent need for reform resonates not only on racetracks, but across the equestrian industry, reminding us of our obligation to safeguard those who cannot speak for themselves.

This bleak situation cannot last. The moment has come to expose the ugly underbelly of the equestrian industry and demand immediate reforms. It is our joint obligation to preserve these lovely species from exploitation and to treat them with kindness and dignity.
