Equestrian sports have been winning attention for quite some time now. From Bill Gates’s daughter Jennifer Gates to Bella Hadid, all seem to engage themselves in the sport, if not as a professional, at least as a practitioner. But what attracts more people to the sport, is the ride itself. The domestication of horses and their adorability mark them as something more than the furious source of utmost power.

But there are those too who just render the animals to their own personal use, or worse, use them as a conduit for their frustration. In February 2022, a video captured a rider hitting her horse vigorously at the North Otago A&P Show, in Oamaru. In fact, she did not stop hurting the animal until a committee member intervened. What could possibly go wrong here?

Equestrian caught on camera for a gruesome activity

In that video, the rider was seen hitting the horse for about a minute, as reported by the NZ Herald in 2022. Reportedly, she was a rider at the event, but she got a yellow card and was disqualified from partaking. Perhaps this enraged her, and she ended up hurting the animal.

Show secretary Katrina Kelly condemned this activity and stated, “The North Otago A&P Show in no way condones the actions of this person.” In fact, she also added that this incident “disgusted” the sports community and defamed the event. What awaits next for her? The national group’s head office replied, “You will have to make contact with the association concerned, as to anything that happened at the show.”

Notably, the event community didn’t tolerate this and asked for help from the national Royal Agricultural Society. In fact, that has been the same case with Scott Manson.

Man went to jail for hurting his horse with a hammer

In 2022, Scott Manson, a horse owner was captured in a video, hitting his animal on the leg with a hammer. He beat the horse nine times in a six-minute-long video. And the heinous act not only weakened its forelimbs, but it also impacted the horse to communicate with other humans in the future.

Notably, the horse never let anyone touch its legs post that. In fact, it refused to get into the stable for some time, after this barbaric act. As per the animal cruelty community, no one should tolerate or be complicit in such an act.
