As soon as the question was raised, the 27-year old thanked the interviewer saying, “Its so sweet. I mean I really honestly have an impostor syndrome but I’ve been in this position almost everyday both in terms of medical school when I’m about to graduate”. Adding to her statement, she pointed towards her upbringing, where she never got to feel proud of being rich.

She continued about her teenage life, where she was drawn towards minimalism. Growing up in the spotlight due to her father’s prominence in the technology industry she said, “You know growing up it was always clear that the environment we grew up in was not ours”. They were always told to cherish the blessings, as her further words explain, “It was something that was a given privilege, some place we were lucky to be in”.
The pursuit of happiness beyond wealth
Throughout the interview, Jennifer emphasized the importance of staying true to one’s own roots and looking beyond material wealth. She expressed happiness for the opportunities she got in childhood from her parents and recalled, “They’ve always had my back”. Gates also has to work to maintain her mental health, as she’s sometimes prone to anxiety.

Jennifer Gates is an incoming pediatrician, as well as has an accomplished background in equestrian arena. Reflecting on her journey from privilege to finding a purpose, she told, “I also meditate and journal regularly”. This usually makes us feel less alone! Her decision to open up about her experiences reminded us that true wealth lies not only in material possessions, but in personal growth and empathy of an individual.
