Recently Graduated Daughter of Bill Gates Mourns the Saddening Loss of a Fellow Medical Student Who Fought for a Noble Cause

May 24 was a downhearted day for the healthcare community upon hearing the news of a medical student, Dr. Nakita Mortimer’s suicide. The Haitian-American was a much-loved personality in the medical sector for advocating better working conditions for healthcare professionals. Saddened by her demise, fresh off her graduation, Bill Gates’s daughter Jennifer Gates also expressed her condolences for the fellow medical student’s demise.

Yesterday, Jennifer Gates took to her Instagram story to share a heartwarming message about the tragic loss of Dr. Mortimer. As an MD candidate, Jenn appreciated her efforts in bringing change to the healthcare sector and expressed her gratitude who fought for a noble cause.

Jennifer Gates on Dr. Nakita Mortimer’s demise

The young Dr. Mortimer was an anesthesiologist trainee at Montefiore Medical Center. Born in Port-au-Prince, Haiti, she earned her bachelor’s degree from New York University. Following this, Nakita did her training at St. John’s University. 

Throughout her time at the Montefiore Medical Center, she created a union to demand better work conditions, pay scales, and mental health situations for healthcare practitioners. However, Mortimer’s unfortunate suicide has reflected that mental well-being requires more effort at healthcare centers. The importance of mental health and the need for awareness and accessible resources to individuals facing mental health must be taken into consideration as a reminder.

Reports suggested that Dr. Nakita succumbed to self-inflicted injuries and has been linked to suicide. Condolences are being sent to her Instagram account have brought attention to her ongoing battle with anxiety disorders and depression.

In her Instagram story, Jenn Gates shared a post written by the oncologist, Dr. Laura Vater. It had a deep message in the memory of the Late Dr. Mortimer. The post on Jenn’s story read, “Prayers, love, peace, and light to the family and loved ones of Dr. Nakita Mortimer. She was fighting for better pay and working conditions for residents in NYC. RIP.”

Congressman Jamaal Bowman wrote on Twitter, “Sending love & prayer to the family of Dr. Nakita Mortimer. She was an anesthesiologist resident at Montefiore & a powerful labor organizer for racial equity in medicine. We will keep fighting for mental health support so no more precious lives are lost. Rest in peace.”

Gates’s dedicated work for better healthcare conditions

During her interview with Sidelines Magazine, Jennifer shared that she aspired to become a doctor since her childhood. Her drive for it was found at her family’s dinner table. She said, “I grew up hearing about children’s mortality at the dinner table, about polio, about the HIV/AIDS epidemic”.

Besides, her parents have also indulged in combating the health challenges globally. To date, Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation has contributed more than $50 billion to global health and development, U.S. education, and other causes. They also contributed around $355 million during the pandemic. Observing her parent’s dedication to supporting noble health causes, Gates found her purpose in pursuing medicine. 

The world will forever remember the contribution of Dr. Nakita Mortimer to the healthcare sector. However, her demise provokes the industry to analyze the loopholes that are troubling the mental health of the health workers.
