A historic estate in Reno, Nevada is currently on sale. Constructed in 1989 and most recently updated in 1999, the mansion once housed members of the Harrah family. William F. Harrah (1911-1978) was a gambling magnate. Harrah’s Hotels and Casinos owned a network that extended from Las Vegas to Atlantic City. Who is William Fisk Harrah?

William Harrah was a mechanical engineering student at UCLA. He dropped out when the Great Depression hit. After working in many family-owned businesses, he came up with his first successful business venture. It was a family-owned business featuring a game of skill based on bingo, which was banned in California. Harrah came to Reno in 1937, with gambling legal there. He also opened casinos near Lake Tahoe. Harrah was influential in creating the Nevada Gaming Control Board in 1955. Four years hence, he played a vital role in establishing the Nevada Gaming Commission. His company was the first in the gaming field to trade on the New York Stock Exchange.

Harrah had a vast collection of automobiles with 1453 cars to his name. The collection of vintage motor cars began in 1948. Holiday Inns purchased Harrah’s company and collection in 1980. With it economically not viable to maintain them, they sold most of Harrah’s Automobile Collection. About 300 cars escaped the auction block. They are now in the National Automobile Museum in Reno, a mere 13 minutes away.
