“Full Circle Moment”: Days After Addressing IOC, Lindsey Vonn Reveals Salt Lake City’s Status for 2034 Winter Olympics

Lindsey Vonn may not be racing down the slopes anymore. Regardless, she is involved in much more than her sport in a different capacity. As Chair of Athlete Experience, she is part and parcel of Salt Lake City’s bid to host the 2034 Winter Olympics. The capital of Utah received a major boost in that enterprise via an International Olympic Committee (IOC) announcement.

Salt Lake City last hosted the Winter Olympics in 2002. That was a significant event in more ways than one. Conducted less than a year after the devastating 9/11 attacks, it was also the curtain-raiser for Lindsey Vonn on the Olympic stage. She took to her social media to share the update courtesy of the IOC.

Major milestone reached for 2034 Winter Olympics bid

Lindsey Vonn shared a post on Instagram. She added a series of images, including one where she shook hands with Thomas Bach, President of the IOC. The words adjoining the images went thus, “BIG NEWS!! Salt Lake City 2034 Olympics just cleared a major milestone as the International Olympic Committee announced today we are the ‘preferred host.'”

That was not all. Lindsey Vonn additionally wrote, “As Chair of Athlete Experience, it’s an honor and privilege to be a part of this Olympic bid. My first games were in Salt Lake 2002 and it is such a full-circle moment to be a part of this incredible campaign. We are almost there, guys! US.” The IOC also confirmed they were in exclusive talks with France and the US, the latter close to getting the nod for the 2034 Winter Olympics.

The Winter Games to likely return to American soil

As things stand, Salt Lake City is the preferred host for the 2034 Winter Olympics. Los Angeles will also host its third Olympic Games in 2028. The Winter Olympics were last hosted by the US in 2002. As per the IOC, the number of available venues for the Winter Games is in sharp decline owing to climate change. They consider only 15 countries capable of hosting the event.

The US still features prominently on that list. They shifted their focus away from 2030 to 2034, in order to avoid a clash with LA28. Other cities bidding for 2030 fell out of the race, such as Sapporo, Japan, and Vancouver, Canada, clearing a path for the French Alps. With the host cities to be named in July, Salt Lake City appears to be a shoo-in to host the Games in 2034.
