Legendary American diver Greg Louganis has decided to put up his medals along with some other items for an auction. The diver took this step to fund charities and the next phase of his life.

Louganis is the only one in Olympics history to sweep the diving events in successive Olympic games. He is also the first driver to get the perfect score from all seven judges in a major international meeting. It happened in the 1982 world championship.

Greg Louganis to part ways with his medals in the memorabilia auction

The memorabilia auction, as it is being called, will take place in December 2022. While some find it strange for an athlete to willingly part ways with his medals, Greg believes that his journey with his medals has run its course. The diver said, “We collect, we collect, we collect, and then it serves its purpose, and then we let it go. [The sale] is an opportunity for those medals to have a life beyond.”

He added, “A lot of times we hold things so preciously that it ends up you get strangled by it. Holding things with a light touch is another practice that I’m adapting.”

Greg believes that the medals are not all that’s there to his identity. While they have been a significant part of his life, they don’t define him. The 62-year-old said, “The medals, it’s in the history books. They don’t define me. That’s just a part of who I am, but it’s not all of who I am.”

All about the auction

The auction process has been simplified for potential buyers. It isn’t necessary for those interested in viewing the items to be auctioned to register. However, if one wants to bid for an item, they first have to register through the link provided on the official page. Once the registration is complete, the buyers can proceed to place their bid.

However, if one wants to buy an item instantly, instead of waiting until D-day, that option is available too. Although in the said circumstances, the buyer needs to make the payments right away. All the auction items will be shipped to the respective buyers within 24-48 hours. Apart from his medals, the auction items include signed photographs, posters, magazines, bowls, mementos, and some of his personal belongings.
