American gymnast Joscelyn Roberson is currently going through a purple patch in her career. The past few months have been special in the 17-year-old’s competitive life. Her recent achievements have become even more special when her struggle with a rare condition is factored in. Previously gymnastics GOAT Simone Biles had shared her struggle too with this condition, which is more prone to gymnasts. After Roberson openly talked about having it, she worked through it to find sequential successes in her career.

Twisties are a condition often targeting gymnasts, where they lose their synchronization between the mind and the body. However, working past her twisties, Roberson has reaped rewards at various competitions like DTB Cup, Cairo World Cup, Pan American Championships, etc.

Talks with Simone Biles helped ease the pain for Roberson

Nearly a month ago, Joscelyn Roberson had openly talked about her issues with the twisties. She suffered mental blocks and at a very young age as a teenager, it was more than overwhelming for her. Knowing full well that Simone Biles had suffered from the same condition two years ago, Roberson admitted that she and Biles have had many discussions on the subject.

Now, Roberson has again spoken to the Olympics about it, saying, “Just in general, I have improved the most mentally in my gymnastics because before I used to be so scared of everything, especially on floor and bars”.

It’s as though those discussions worked, and possibly worked miraculously since Roberson is currently leaving no stone unturned in giving her absolute best at every competition. She contributed to Team USA winning gold at the DTB Pokal Team Challenge and Pan American Championships and also earned two gold medals at the 2023 Gymnastics Federation Cairo World Cup.

She owes a lot to her coaches for her current success

Cecile and Laurent Landi aren’t a bunch of fresh faces in the athletics world. The duo was also behind Madison Kocian’s road to gold and silver medals at Rio Olympics. Thereafter, they joined the Houston: World Championship Centre, the family gym of Simone Biles. As for Roberson, she moved from Texarkana, Texas to Houston last year and met this fine coaching duo. It has been a literal life-altering experience for the 17-year-old.

After twisties gave Roberson a loss of sense of one’s body, her working past it to win so many medals is a testament to any young athlete. However, working closely with Laurent and Cecile Landi, Roberson is looking forward to completely putting this mental blip behind her and focusing on what’s important in front of her – The Paris Olympics, 2024. She said to Olympics, “Laurent really broke it down in a way where it wasn?t as scary for me anymore, and I got to get past those boundaries that were keeping me back for so long”, thereby eliminating her fear.
