According to FOX9 News, Diamond Cook’s relentless pursuit of her dream has spanned over a decade, aiming to compete at the college level. Despite facing challenges during her freshman year, she remained unwavering in her determination to overcome every obstacle in her path. Her mother, Sharon Cook, fittingly describes her as “A Diamond in the rough,” an undiscovered talent with no videos at any colleges.

Fisk University’s program launched last year at HBUC, and now Cook is following the footsteps. This summer, an opportunity at the Brown Girls Do Gymnastics camp changed the trajectory of Diamond’s journey. Her exceptional front tuck caught the attention of Aja Sims-Fletcher, the Head Gymnastics Coach at Talladega College. Beyond her athletic prowess, Diamond’s character exuded a unique spark and energy that drew Coach Sims-Fletcher in. “I saw something in her, kind of like a spark and an energy that was really, really inviting,” said Coach Sims-Fletcher. “And I was like, wow, you are very good, and I would love for you to be a part of this team.” she continued.

Carving a Legacy at Talladega College
The invitation to join the first-ever gymnastics team at Talladega College filled Cook with a mix of thrill and bittersweet emotions. Cook couldn’t control her emotions and said, “I was like ‘Yes, I would love to be on that team. I would do anything to be on that team.” However, with this big opportunity comes the bitter-sweet moment of leaving home and friends. Accepting the opportunity meant leaving her home, family, and the previous team behind. But her eagerness to embrace the new challenge outweighed everything else.

Under the guidance of Coach Sims-Fletcher, a three-time All-American gymnast herself, Diamond Cook is poised to make history and etch her name in the gymnastics books. Her words inspire many. “I’m going to be making history, which is really exciting” she said. As she sets her sights on making history, she also aspires to inspire young girls like herself, just as legends of this game.
