Suni Lee has been one of the most influential figures in US gymnastics. She has been a dominant force ever since her debut and has given some incredible performances in the past. But the past few months have not been great for the 2020 Olympic all-around champion. She sustained a kidney condition a few months ago, which ultimately hampered her training and performance. Despite all these challenges, Lee fought hard, came back to the US Classics, and delivered an exceptional performance.

However, her participation in the ongoing XFinity Gymnastics Championships ended on a disappointing note due to a significant setback she encountered. Following this, Lee didn’t able to make it to the list of the 2023 Senior US Women National Team.

In the wake of her kidney ailment, Suni Lee withdrew from the Xfinity championships. Hence, she missed out on the selection of the 2023 Senior U.S. Women’s National Team. Nonetheless, the final roster came hours after Simone Biles created history in the SAP arena when she clinched a record-breaking eighth national title. The news of Suni Lee not making it to the team was shared by The Gymternet on their Twitter handle. The list features names like Simone Biles, Jordan Chiles, Skye Blakely, Shilese Jones, Leanne Wong, and many other elite gymnastics prodigies.

More so, in an interview with the Olympics, Lee discussed her health condition, shedding light on her comeback journey and the challenges she faced after being diagnosed with this ailment.

The gymnast admitted that due to her health concerns; she was inconsistent with her training and spent five months recovering from the illness. She also added that if she had not encountered this sickness, she would have been ready for the Olympics by now.

Lee further conceded with her insecurities and fear of not performing as per everyone’s expectations. She stated, “It’s like, ‘Oh, my gosh, now if I go out there and I don’t show them I’m better than I was at the last Olympics,’ people are gonna be like, ‘Oh, she didn’t deserve to win.” She also added that she let these thoughts overcome her mindset and let these things get in her head too much.

Suni Lee’s uphill battle with the Kidney ailment

Talking about her health issues, Lee stated, “I have been in and out of the gym just because there’s just so many doctor’s appointments, and I’m taking a lot of medication, so it kind of varies every day.” More so, this Olympic champion was struggling with her grips as she used to have swollen fingers due to her health. But she also added that she was working hard to gain back her old state so she could go there and perform well at the upcoming Summer Olympics in the French capital.
