The American athletes are prepping for the Winter Cup with full fervor, the first big event of the year and a critical step toward earning a coveted berth on the U.S. national team. Veteran Olympians like Gabby Douglas and Brody Malone, who are staging a triumphant comeback after a significant break, are on the lineup as well. The 2022 world high bar champion and Tokyo Olympian, Brody Malone, is a clear favorite after recovering from a leg injury over a year ago. With his renaissance, Yul Moldauer was all praises for his compatriot.

The five-man Olympic team determiner, Winter Cup, will take place at the Kentucky International Convention Center in Louisville from February 23 to 25 with 45 men already registered as of 20 Feb. Malone suffered a right leg injury in March 2023 during the DTB Pokal event finals in Germany. His commitment was never in doubt, though; he had to take time off, depriving the mats of his presence. Malone’s competitive drive puts him in a solid position to compete for a berth on the Olympic squad later this year, despite his lack of recent mat appearances.

Because of injury, four of the six players of the 2023 world team will not be competing in the Winter Cup. They will, however, return to the NCAA scene in March to help Stanford win a remarkable fifth straight national championship. The American men’s team performed admirably at the 2023 World Championships, winning their first team medal at the Olympic or world championship level since 2014. The absence of important players might present difficulties and increase the difficulty as the Winter Cup becomes a crucial stage in forming the perfect squad for the 2024 Paris Olympics.

What’s different this year?
