The flagbearers for Team USA’s gymnastics contingent for the Paris Olympics will be announced at June’s team trials, but still, last night’s American Classics 2024 also promised to highlight the depth of the country’s artistic gymnastics prowess. Katy, Texas played host to the Saturday event, and Olympic gold medalist Suni Lee was at the center of things with fans hoping to see Lee bolstering her claim for her ticket to Paris.

While she did post the highest scores of the meet (14.300 on the balance beam), fans can’t stop but speculate if her health will become a major factor in France.

In the Reddit group r/Gymnastics, Lee’s exploits at the US Classics have been brought up as a context to discuss her chances of flying to Paris with Jade Carey and others in July. “Am I overreacting in thinking her doing AA seems counter productive at this point in the season?“, states the post by hwe922020. The Redditor elaborated that Suni should just focus on her stronger suits instead of trying to partake in all four events, especially with the Olympics around the corner.

Lee’s injury has kept her on the sidelines for a long time, and her return was once again stalled at the Winter Cup earlier this year for the same. However, the Auburn star has been training hard to etch her name again in gymnastics history. But from the looks of things, fans still have their doubts.

Fans sound the alarms

Some fans think that being selective would be the way to go for Suni to defend her All-Around gold medal from the Tokyo Olympics. While some others seem to think that if Suni isn’t given the chance to show up at all events, that might seriously put a dent in her self-confidence.  “Not having four events is probably more of a liability“, commented starspeakr.

The process of announcing the national squads to represent the US on international stages has drawn significant ire of fans recently. Relating that to the current situation involving Suni, another fan also said this probably isn’t the way to go.

Given how her health conditions got the better of Lee over several months, another fan believes that the 10th most decorated American gymnast of all time is headed for disaster even if she manages to make it to Paris. “…makes me think the chances of her making this team are next to nonexistent“, is what the fan has to say.

…her health is a bigger issue than it was last time“, noted another gymnastics loyalist, claiming that Suni has very little time on her hands to make ends meet. The 2022 NCAA gold winner in the balance beam event missed the national camp earlier this year as well, and the fan firmly believes Lee’s health has never been worse.

Despite being a fan of Lee’s high-flying action, this fan thinks she shouldn’t push herself too much, especially when there’s no need for the same. “Truthfully, I don’t think it would be worth it to risk her ankles when the team really doesn’t need her scores on vault and floor“, the fan clarified their take on the matter.
