Simone Biles became an all-time great after taking part in her first Olympics. The star athlete broke records and won four golds in a single Olympic Games. A first for U.S women’s gymnastics. Even while struggling with mental health issues, Biles won one silver, and a bronze, in the Tokyo 2021 Olympics. While Biles hasn’t competed in a while, she is planning to make her return in the 2024, Paris Olympics.

However, when the gymnastics legend donned a Houston Astros uniform to kick off the World Series, things didn’t turn out so well.

Simone Biles kicks off the World Series

On October 29, Simone Biles kicked off Game 1 of the MLB World Series. The Houston Astors played against the Philadelphia Phillies, on their home ground. The gymnastics legend came to show her support for the Astros. Before the game, the Olympic gold medalist said, “Hey Astors fans! Let’s play ball!”

The official Houston Astros Twitter page posted the clip with the caption, “Simone Biles gets the world series started.”

However, the reactions of the fans weren’t very positive. The Astros became embroiled in a sign-stealing scandal in 2019. It came to light that during the 2017-18 season, the Texas team used cameras to monitor and steal signs from opponents during home games. They also relayed the information to their players on the field, using a trash can lid to make specific sounds.

In January 2020, the MLB confirmed these allegations, and it rocked the baseball world. While the team has continued to find success post-scandal, its reputation has taken a massive hit.

Fans had a mixed reaction

Since the scandal, fans have booed the Houston Astros at almost every game. Hence, their post on Twitter featuring Simone Biles also drew mixed reactions. Most fans were quick t point out that the Astros were cheaters and didn’t have kind words for Simone either. One fan wrote, “She’s a QUITTER and you are CHEATERS.”

Others echoed the same sentiment.

Sarcasm wasn’t in short supply either.

However, some fans were also praising Simone. One fan wrote, “Nice to see her doing well.”

A gymnast like Simone Biles is a once a generation talent. Not just at the Olympics, Simone also 19 golds at the Gymnastics World Championships from 2013 to 2019. However, even a sports icon like Biles couldn’t help redeem the reputation of the Astros. It seems baseball fans won’t be forgetting what the Texas team did for the foreseeable future.
