A change in national representation has been a common practice among athletes with dual citizenship. While some fetch a better opportunity, some take on the heritage the families carry. The practice, however, has its limitations and regulations in providing a fairground. With the Paris Olympics nearing on the map, the IOC committee has news on the practice involving a gymnastics star.

A federation is limited to request changes of nationality for two athletes per year per discipline. On the 18th of January, Georgia-Rose Brown, the Australian 2014 Commonwealth Games silver medalist, was one among the two in gymnastics to receive the nod on nationality change.

IOC permits nationality change ahead of Olympic preparations

On the 18th of January, Olympics.com confirmed that the IOC had permitted Georgia-Rose Brown’s shift of nationality to New Zealand. The nod was given following Rule 41 of the Olympic Charter, the release states. The International Olympic Committee (IOC) Executive Board ran in comprehension with the Guidelines on Athlete Expression for the Olympic Games in Paris 2024. The decision will allow athletes to express their views during the games. Further along, the decision arrives to be in place in accordance with another condition.

The regulations state that a change of nationality can only be put into action if the previous country were to grant consent. The decision by both parties will allow an athlete to continue with the representation for three years before demanding the next switch. Now with news settled down, Brown might have a chance to represent New Zealand in the Olympics given the gymnastics star makes the national team.

How does Brown’s path to the team read?

Georgia Brown started her notable gymnastics career when she represented Australia in the 2011 World Artistic Gymnastics. The participation contributed towards the team’s qualification for the 2012 Olympics in London. The gymnast’s skills were rewarded when she was named as the alternative for the London games the following year. Though the gymnast did not fetch major wins, she ensured to dominate over the Pacific Rim and Common Wealth Games.

“Georgia-Rose Brown is also on her way up and she has been getting stronger in the last couple of national camps,” the gymnast’s coach remarked following her Common Wealth selection. “I persevered through all my injuries because my love and desire for the sport wouldn’t let me stop. Now I’ve made the team I couldn’t be more excited,’’ Brown reciprocated. Carrying on the resilience and the love, Brown holds 3 medals each in Pac Rim and CWG.
