For Shilese Jones, things have been on a roll ever since she came back from her long injury-induced hiatus. However, it seems like a change of plans is in order, especially considering how her old foe reared its ugly head once again after last month’s Core Hydration Classic.

For almost 10 months now, Jones hasn’t finished less than second place in every competition she participated in. And yet, fans laid bare their frowning faces after news of her injury flaring up started making the rounds across cyberspace. Now, it looks inevitable fate has made its impact and the 21-year-old has to pay heed.

A recent article by Gymnastics Now has revealed that the two-time World Championships gold medalist won’t be appearing for the Xfinity US Gymnastics Championships in Fort Texas this weekend. Via USA Gymnastics, Shilese released the statement: “Unfortunately, I won’t be participating in the Xfinity Championships this year.” However, the silver lining is that it seems like the decision comes from a position of being fixated on pursuing the larger prize.

With Paris as my ultimate focus, it’s best for me to prioritize recovery and resting my shoulder this weekend. Both the medical team and I are confident this is the right decision to ensure I’m at full strength for Trials,” mentioned Jones in her statement. Last year’s runner-up of the Nationals also elaborated that her injury is making it difficult for her to even raise her hands, which in turn is hindering her from performing to the best of her abilities at the moment. However, the petition process could become handy since Jones has made it clear that she wants to compete in Minneapolis at the end of this month for the Olympic Team Trials.

Despite the stakes on the table, Jones’ decision has found support from the medical staff, who also believe that ensuring her physical prowess should be the main focus for the time being. “With Paris as my ultimate focus, it’s best for me to prioritize recovery and resting my shoulder this weekend. Both the medical team and I are confident this is the right decision to ensure I’m at full strength for Trials.” said the gymnast in her statement.

With allies intending their support, Shilese Jones to pick up cheerleading duties

Olympian Katherine Johnson Clarke took to social media moments after Shilese’s decision came to light to give their two cents on the matter. “Such a wise decision,” wrote the 1984 Olympics medalist, opining that her comeback journey has been like an investment that will only compound in value for the Team Trials as she shared a Tweet by Scott Bregman. However, Jones refuses to be bogged down by the setback and is determined to use her energy to hype her colleagues. “I’m excited to support my fellow athletes and teammates this weekend,” the gymnast was quoted saying.

The lineup for Day 2 of the US Championships is staked. Simone Biles, Jordan Chiles, and Jade Carey, the trio who finished the Core Hydration in first, third, and fourth places (Shilese was the second), will all be jumping into the action later today. Auburn’s representative Suni Lee, who is battling injuries herself and aims to make it her second consecutive Olympics, will also be one of the event’s biggest attractions.

The tournament’s first day saw Brody Malone wrap up the men’s competitions at the top. On the other hand, despite having a strong start, Yul Moldauer dropped to fifth place after a disappointing second half.
