The road to the 2024 Paris Olympics has been a rocky one for many gymnasts around the world. Major injuries have forced a staggering number of top international competitors to the sidelines, potentially weakening the field. However, this unexpected turn of events might inadvertently pave the way for Simone Biles and the future powerhouse American gymnastics team to seize Olympic glory.

An overview on the popular Reddit forum r/Gymnastics laid out the toll – a list of top gymnasts from numerous countries now off the field due to significant injuries sustained in the past 12 months. The list reads like a roll call of the sport’s biggest stars.

Among the female athletes affected are Australian stars Miella Brown, Commonwealth Games 2022 team silver medalist Romi Brown, and 2022 Commonwealth Games all-around and vault champion Georgia Godwin, Belgian World Champion on uneven bar Nina Derwael, Canadian balance beam silver medalist in World Championship Ana Padurariu, and national team member Denelle Pedrick.

Nina Derwael, Jennifer, and Jessica Gadirova are among those forced to halt their careers to recover from serious issues like broken shoulders, torn ACLs, and fractured ankles. The male gymnasts have also faced their share of setbacks, with notable injuries sustained by Canadian gold medalist at the 2021 FIG Artistic Gymnastics World Cup series, William Émard. French artistic gymnast Benjamin Osberger sprained the ACL of his left knee in 2023.  Germany’s Lucas Kochan is in a recovery period after he underwent three knee surgeries. New Zealand’s 5X gold medalist at the Oceania Championships Mikhail Koudinov dislocated his right and left in two consecutive years.

Some gymnasts, such as Italy’s 3X Youth Olympics gold medalist Giorgia Villa and Ukraine’s artistic gymnast with 14 gold medals across different Championships Illia Kovtun, are dealing with persistent, long-term injuries as they strive to make a comeback. Belgium’s Lisa Vaelen was sidelined due to illness rather than injury.

The sheer number of superstar gymnasts recently sidelined by serious injuries has undeniably thinned the competition field for multiple countries at the upcoming Paris Olympics. This rash of setbacks robbing several nations of their elite athletes inadvertently creates an opening for American gymnastics icon Simone Biles and her talented teammates to seize the Olympic spotlight.

While the gymnastics world naturally extends its well-wishes for full recoveries to those athletes battling back from injury, their absence undoubtedly boosts Team USA’s medal chances in Paris. With traditional powers diminished, the 2024 Games provide Biles and company a golden opportunity to reassert their dominance on the global stage. Expect their relentless pursuit of excellence and passion for the sport to be on full display as they vie to etch their names in Olympic lore.
