Men’s gymnastics domain may be slightly less celebrated, but this time, it’s hard to say so. Ahead of the 2023 World Artistic Gymnastics Championship, fans awaited some phenomenal displays by their preferred gymnasts. Safe to say, the first day did not disappoint them. While the USA roster looked impressive, there’s one who needed a special mention. Yul Moldauer, the South Korean-born, American artistic gymnast, proved the world wrong again. Boasting an unwavering passion for his beloved sport, Yul Moldauer’s setbacks didn’t hold him back.

As rotation 1 of subdivision 3 concluded with a bang, the final list was rolled out. Even though Japan topped the standings, USA trails just below it. That being said, the 2017 US all-around champion couldn’t believe his own finesse on display.

Gymnastics Now took to their ‘X handle to post a candid statement of Yul, after his parallel bars execution. The post read, “Yul Moldauer (USA) was surprised by his execution score on parallel bars. Initially was like “dang it” because he hit the bar.” Despite Yul’s slip, the gymnast managed to grab a grand 14.966, when bar slips often cause a massive score deduction. Moldauer said, “But I saw my execution score, and I was like, ‘What the h**k?’ because usually hitting the bar is usually a five or three [tenth deduction]. So I was really surprised to get a [14.966], so I’m crossing my fingers that I can squeeze in finals there.”

The 2017 World Bronze medalist’s in-floor exercise may not consider parallel bars as his strong suit. However, the gymnast was left awe-struck at the unanticipated result. The 2018 Male Athlete of the Year thought that a hit on the bar might deduct a decent number, but that didn’t happen. The results lighted a kindle of hope for Moldauer tiptoeing into the finals.

A not-so-clean pommel landing

Earlier today, Gymnastics Now called out Yul’s maneuver on the pommel horse. Not having foreseen a topple, the media took a light jab at him. Moreover, the 1996-born withdrew from the World Championships last year for someone else to take his place, per sources. This left the athlete saddened ahead of a bright career. His horse story this year had a sad ending too.

Gymnastics Now wrote, “Yul Moldauer (USA) PH: Might’ve put his hand on the horse while doing his mount on the pommels? If he did, it was quick. Swing into his mount is stilted and almost doesn’t get around and up to the handstand. It was muscled, for sure. 12.666.”

Though his determination has not extinguished the lamp completely, his upcoming performances expect a better landing. The next event of the men’s final is scheduled for October 3, 2023.
