Call it a mishap, an unexpected upheaval, or simply bad luck- this is Kayla DiCello’s unexpected journey! The U.S. Olympic trials in Minneapolis on June 27th took a heartbreaking turn when she suffered a devastating injury during her vault. This abruptly ended her competition and dashed her hopes of joining the U.S. team for the Paris Games. Wheelchair-bound and in tears, DiCello left the competition floor after a botched landing in her first event of the night.

However, just a day later, on June 28th, she took to Instagram to share a message that rang deeply within the gymnastics community. In her post, DiCello expressed gratitude amidst adversity, acknowledging the ruptured Achilles tendon that marked a painful setback in her Olympic journey. Despite the setback, she reflected on years of dedication, the support of her coaches, teammates, family, and fans, and the pliability needed to pursue her dreams.

Looking ahead, she affirmed her determination to take on a healing journey. As she puts it, “It truly takes a village to get to this point, and your support throughout good days and bad has been something I’ve leaned on more than you know. As I begin my healing journey, I’m thankful for your prayers and good wishes. This is not the end of my story.”
