“This Team Is Sad Without Ovi”: Capitals’ Latest Setback Leaves NHL World Dejected

The recent match between Carolina Hurricanes and Washinton Capitals proved to be fireworks for the former. With a spectacular 4–1 score, the Hurricanes celebrated their 2023 NHL Stadium Series win against the Capitals. On the other hand, the Capitals fans were saddened by their loss and missed the presence of their star player Alexander Ovechkin.

The Washinton Capitals Captain is currently with his family in Moscow, Russia due to an unfortunate personal crisis. Ovechkin Sr. had passed away on Wednesday. Evidently, the impact of Ovi’s absence was felt in the game. Fans commented about it on social media.

Washington Capitals stand with Alex Ovechkin in his tough time

Alexander Ovechkin’s father, Mikhail Ovechkin passed away at 71 due to known health problems. The Washington Capitals shared the news on his Instagram thanking everyone for their support.

Moreover, his team has their full support for Ovechkin. head coach Peter Laviolette told Game Hockey.ca, “Life is tough. When it comes to your family and parents, that’s what matters. He’s going to deal with some things right now, and we’re going to be supportive.” After Ovechkin’s post, his team issued a statement expressing their condolences for their teammate’s big loss. Moreover, the Capitals remembered Mikhail Ovechkin for his “significant and consistent presence at Capitals games and practices.”

Nevertheless, a longtime friend and former Capitals teammate, Ilya Kovalchuk, representatives from the Russian Hockey Federation, as well as Dynamo Moscow’s hockey and soccer teams, also attended Ovechkin’s father’s funeral at Dolgoprudnensky cemetery on Saturday.

Fans wish for Alexander Ovechkin to return soon

The NHL world was left dejected by Ovi’s absence on Saturday’s match. As the fans felt Ovechkin’s absence in the ice rink, Alexander was away in Russian mourning the absence of his father.

Many fans jumped to ESPN’S Facebook comment section expressing their thoughts for the captain. Take a look. A fan wished Ovechkin to return soon, “This team is sad without Ovi. Hopefully he’s back soon”

Another fan wrote that Capital’s embarrassing loss was only because of their star player missing, “That’s only because the difference maker wasn’t there #8”

Moreover, a fan gave it back to one of the Hurricanes fans when he tried to make fun of the Capitals’

“Capitals don’t even have any weapons on their team vs a star loaded Carolina team.”

The Capitals fan replied;

yeah you are right the greatest player to ever play wasn’t on the ice today (OVI)”
