Ellison Bay in northern Door County is famous for its fair share of shipwrecks lying under its water. These pre-World War II relics are often visited by people for their historical and touristy appeal. Ellison Bay, in the upper Midwestern state of Wisconsin, often experiences low temperatures in winter, which freezes its water bodies. In a recent instance, one such frozen water body over a shipwreck (which is clearly visible), turned into an Ice Skating zone for some people. When shared over social media, several others recalled the time they themselves had fun over there.

In this picture, a greenish ice sheet can be seen, atop which a few people are skating. Underneath, a silhouette of a ship from a previous time period can also be seen. The allure of the place becomes immediately apparent to everyone. Henceforth, adventurers start sharing their own experiences of adventures.

“Loved to ice skate on the river in WI”

“I remember one winter oh, maybe 60 or so, the ice froze off the park beach in a huge circle and it was crystal clear! We all had fun!”

“I think I snorkeled out to that wreck one summer. Hedgehog Bay! Awesome experience!”

“You’re looking at the Fleetwing which is in Garret Bay. I’ve dove that many times. We did an ice dive on it many moons ago”.

“this sounds like something you should try”

“The Lilly Amoit is the shipwreck listed for this area. I love great lakes maritime history. Interesting how she sank”.

People have done all sorts of activities over there, from Ice skating to snorkeling to ice diving. Dan Eggert, a Door County photographer for over 25 years, has taken several breathtaking pictures besides this one. Although they were ice skating, there is also its closest discipline noticeably different from it.

How is Ice Skating different from Figure Skating?

There are some major differences between Figure Skating and Ice Skating. Pairs at the professional level do Ice Skating and it involves no jumps or throws. Figure skating, on the other hand, focuses more on jumps, lifts, death spirals, and spins. The latter was one of the main sports in the Beijing Olympics, and American skater Nathan Chen made it even more memorable with his spectacular performance. Post victory, Chen announced the details about his ‘Stars on Ice’ tour.
