The ongoing US Olympic track and field trials at the Hayward Field are full of surprises. In its schedule of five days, the athletic show has maintained its pages by giving place to both merriment and heartbreaks. While icons like Christian Coleman and Athing Mu have faced rock bottom, young guns like Quincy Wilson have found their steps solidified in the seniors’ leagues. Add Rai Benjamin’s name to that as well. No, he is far away from competing in his trademark 400m hurdles. But his wish has played a different song.

On June 24, the Olympian sat with a few track and field connoisseurs, including Noah Lyles, Grant Holloway, and Mike Tirico. It was a special occasion, as both Noah and Grant had already bedazzled the track with their performances. However, Rai made the situation more gripping. In that conversation, he explained his wish by stating, “We need a flyover”.

Soon, Noah Lyles supported him with this wish. However, the host argued that the presentation would need money. But Rai Benjamin assured him of having money already. And later, Brandin Cooks explained in his IG story, “You want a flyover? I got you”, tagging Benjamin. However, the wide receiver from the Dallas Cowboys must have heard the professional hurdler’s full statement.

While confessing his wish, Rai asked for the F-35 fighter jets, and that too, on the upcoming Saturday, at the closing ceremony. So in arranging the facility, a regular NFL athlete has to face a lot of complications. But for Brandin, the arrangement may not cause a problem because of his background.

Sharing his roots with the US Army, Brandin Cooks takes special pride in the messages that the US Army holds. In one of his interviews in 2017, the wide receiver shared tidbits about his respect for the guard of the nation. Furthermore, he added, “My father was a Marine, my uncle was a Marine, the family fought in the Vietnam War, has the utmost respect for the men and women that fight for our freedom”. Therefore, Rai Benjamin should remain assured about the promptness of the arrangement. Another fact should relieve both the American citizens.

According to data published in 2011, the army officials or the Pentagon have never put pressure on the citizens’ pockets to arrange the flyovers. The data shows that each military flyover can be worth $13,962 in today’s value. But the presenters or audiences have never been asked for a single penny, as the Army has included the cost in their budget for training exercises. And in the past, the same Oregon field has witnessed the military flyover. Rai Benjamin must have remembered that.

Rai Benjamin wants to see a repeat of the 2022 World Championships in the sky

In 2022, Hayward Field held a global pomp of track and field sports. Both Noah Lyles and Rai Benjamin tried their best feet in that contest. Surprisingly, the same show, named World Athletics Championships, saw the military flyover, piercing through the blue sky over the stadium.

Not just one or two, the World Athletics arranged multiple flyovers to ornament the 18th edition of the World Athletics Championships. The opening night saw a flyover whereas the sprinting events’ final saw the F-15s flying over the head of the stadium. But the most memorable part came on the opening night of the competition.

The celebration doubled on that occasion as it held the mixed relay of 4x400m and it displayed Allyson Felix, taking her last stride in her professional career that season. Expectedly, the flyover celebrated her contribution to the sport. Now, Rai Benjamin and Noah Lyles want the closing ceremony of the 2024 US Olympic track and field trials to be memorable. Well, the US Army is just a hand away.
