On 14th February, fans celebrated the 66th birthday of veteran NHL player Val James. Many know him as the first African American to play in the NHL. In his long career, James played as a left winger for two teams Buffalo Sabres and Toronto Maple Leafs between 1981 and 1986. The forgotten trailblazer was unstoppable, despite the best efforts of enforcers Terry O’Reilly and John Kordic.

Recently, when the ESPN page wished the legendary player on his birthday, fans jumped at the chance to appreciate the amazing player and human being that he is.

Fans remember Val James as a celebrated NHL and AHL player

Val James’ fans were delighted to wish the former hockey star on his 66th birthday. Val made his debut as an NHL player in 1981, playing seven games with his first team, Sabres.

Later on, in 1983, James was also involved in the AHL, which has apparently left great memories in the minds of his fans. Let’s take a look at some of the comments that show respect that he still garners from his fans.

One fan remembered Val playing in Newmarket and Baltimore during his NHL days, as he wrote:

“Our time in the AHL coincided and I really enjoyed calling games for Maine that Val played in when he was in Newmarket and Baltimore. He gave it everything he had, every night! As tough as they come.”

Another fan recalled Val’s spectacular game against Baltimore in the 1980s.

“I remember Val James with the Rochester Americans back in the mid-1980s. Playing against the Baltimore Skipjacks at the Baltimore Arena now Royal Farms Arena.”

Furthermore, many fans commented on the emotional connection they had with the player.

“He grew up in Hauppauge, Long Island, NY! My brother used to play street hockey with/against him.”
