People often wonder about the amount of money an Olympian makes during his career. Is it a lot? Is every Olympian a millionaire or billionaire? Does being an Olympian once mean you are settled for life? These are the questions that always revolve around people’s minds. Here’s what the podcaster Joe Rogan has to say about all the money involved in the Olympics.

A major part of the revenue generated by the Olympics comes from broadcasting rights. Then there are sponsorships rights as well that contribute to the total revenue.

According to a report, the revenue generated from the 2013 to 2016 Olympics games was $5.7 billion. There’s indeed no doubt that the Olympics is making tons of money. However, the question remains: are athletes being paid enough?

Joe Rogan shares a firm stance on the matter

The podcast king and commentator Joe Rogan is a strong believer that the Olympics is just a business-orientated event and the athletes are never paid what they deserve. He said, “I think that the Olympics are gross…… This is a great opportunity for all those athletes. It’s great for people to watch it, but I think it’s a f**k**g disgusting money grab and all those amateur air quotes athletes don’t get paid s**t.”

Talking about how the situation can change, Joe further added, “these companies are making billions and billions of dollars of them and I really wish they would all quit. I really wish they would say fuck you, pay me.”

How much money do the Olympians actually make?

As per a report, the US athletes are awarded $37,500 for every gold medal, $22,500 for the silver medal, and $15,000 for the bronze medal they win at the Olympics. Even though the amount is not enormous, it’s certainly better than what other athletes get.

Talking about the creamy layer of Olympians, such as Usain Bolt, Michael Phelps, and Shaun White, the money they earn from the event is just a drop in comparison to what IOC generates in revenue.

According to a report, one of the most decorated sprinters ever, Usain Bolt, earned around $33 million in the whole of 2016. A large part of his earnings came from sponsorship deals. If he is earning this much, we can only imagine what would be the situation of other athletes who didn’t even win any medals.
