Five months before the Paris Olympics, Jamaican track and field legend Shelly-Ann Fraser-Pryce announced her retirement decision. The 3x Olympic champion now shifts her focus to her family. In her announcement, Shelly-Ann’s words like “My son needs me” drew a bigger aspect to which many parent-athletes could relate. This is bound to increase in the ongoing Olympic season. However, the International Olympic Committee has something to say about this.
The Athletes’ Commission wing under the IOC has recently published a notice thinking about parent athletes’ plea to allow their kids into the Games village. That announcement might relieve Shelly-Ann Fraser-Pryce and many other such athletes.

After giving birth to son Zyon in 2017, the Tokyo Olympics was the first where Shelly-Ann Fraser-Pryce participated. However, she didn’t have any chance to meet her 4-year-old son there. But as Christian Klaue, the IOC caretaker in Corporate Communication and Public Affairs wrote on X yesterday, the 37-year-old sprinter will get ample chances this time. “Great new initiative: Nursery to give parent athletes quality time with their young children in the Olympic Village during the Olympic Games”, wrote Klaue. The new initiative also has special arrangements based on the kids’ age.
The IOC AC has allowed the kids of nappy/diaper-wearing age and young children in the updated provision. The parent-athletes would have to apply for the guest pass to allow the children and their caregivers into the dedicated zone in the Games village. The National Olympic Committee will provide the guest pass and schedule the meeting time from 9 am-9 pm.

“Pregnancy and motherhood are a natural path in life, and it doesn’t have to mean a career end for female athletes. It is very helpful for both parents and infants to be able to spend time together, especially at such an important moment in an athlete’s sporting life,” Terho claimed. Notably, there are many parent-athletes with Shelly-Ann Fraser-Pryce who might find the policy rejuvenating.

Shelly-Ann Fraser-Pryce and the parent-athletes to welcome the initiative
In Paris, Shelly-Ann Fraser-Pryce might find Aleia Hobbs and Caeleb Dressel in the same league. “I always wanted to become a mother. A big reason? I’m childish, too. I like to mess around, and this is somebody else I can be a child with. We can play all day together,” Hobbs mentioned once. For Caeleb Dressel, things are quite new.
