Despite Being Exhausted, Here’s Why Alex Honnold Was Determined To Complete the 32 Hours-Long “HURT” Summit

Rock climbing is not an easy sport, and who better than Alex Honnold would know about it? Even when it seemed like a tedious task to complete the Red Rock traverse [which he famously calls The HURT (Honnold Ultimate Red Rock Traverse)], Honnold knew he would face more than the usual challenges. But it was not necessary for the legendary rock climber to complete all the 14 classic rock routes.

Yet, despite facing extreme exhaustion, Honnold pushed his limits to reach 23 summits at once. Here is why the champion climber continued his journey to add the Red Rock to his unique “collection”.

How Alex Honnold climbed his way to success

People might have unexpected Honnold to complete his long-awaited Red Rock summit just when he had become a new dad. However, despite his fatherly duties the legendary climber set on the special journey on October 10, 2022. Honnold was accompanied by a few friends who supported the rock climber throughout the rugged journey.

However, when the climber was on the Black Velvet Canyon, a friend pointed out that Honnold had already done enough. Seeing him drained out, he believed Honnold should bring an end to his HURT traverse. According to Outside, one of his friends said. “Alex, why keep going? This is already a massive accomplishment and super proud. And you get to decide what this is. So by stopping now, you aren’t coming up short of anything.”.

But, despite all the physical exhaustion, Honnold remained mentally strong. He replied, “Because there’s a value to picking a goal, and doing what you said you would do, not just quitting when it’s hard.” The HURT traverse was more than just another checklist. It was a goal Honnold was determined to achieve.

Even when it physically hurt him to continue the climb, Honnold was persistent in completing the HURT traverse. Finally, after 32 hours, 35 miles, and 24,000 feet of vertical gain, and crossing 23 summits and 14 classic rock routes, the legendary climber completed his long-envisioned goal of conquering the Red Rock.

In the end, after a content and final down hike, Honnold was rewarded with the presence of his wonderful wife, Sanni, and adorable daughter, June.
